In the present moment, anything and everything is possible. Being in the present moment means that all possibilities are open to you. You probably heard before that it’s important for us to live in the present moment. But do you really understand what that means, why you want to do it more and how you can start living in the present moment? This is what we are going to figure out in today’s episode. I will take you on the present moment journey.
Let’s start with an explanation of what the present moment actually is. We are living in the present moment if we are in the here and now. When we are fully present with our awareness and our senses. When we are completely awake and aware of what is currently happening in our environment, in the physical world around us.
Me talking to you and you currently listening to this episode is the present moment. What you are currently doing while you listen to this episode is the present moment. All the information you are taking in through your senses is happening in the present moment. When you are fully aware and focused on the here and now, you are in the present moment.
Try it out for the next minute together with me. Become fully aware of your body, your environment, and all the information you are currently taking in through your senses. Be aware of your breathing in and breathing out. Try to be fully present for the next few seconds while I stay silent.
You just experienced being in the present moment. Perhaps you realized it or not, but the first reason why you want to spend more living in the present moment is that your mind is resting. You might have realized that when you are fully in the present moment, you are not thinking. I describe this as a pure being. When you step into the present moment, you can find joy in just being.
When I become present, I enjoy the silence of my mind. I enjoy just being present and the calmness that comes with it. In the present moment, I don’t have any problems to solve. I don’t have any worries. I can feel free of any needs in the present moment. and I don’t wish for anything when I am fully present because my mind is not active. The mind that we use to think, ponder, and worry does not exist in the present moment. As soon as you start thinking again, you aren’t any more in the present moment.
The concept of the present moment really clicked for me when I read the book “The Power of Now” by Eckhard Tolle while sitting in a book shop in Cologne. I still remember everything – and you know why? That was the first time I really practised being in the present moment 🙂 Check out his book via this LINK.
Be present and stay in the present moment – as soon as you catch yourself having thought you realize that you lost the connection to the present moment. Your focus went back to your mind and to the thought, you are having. Give it a go and you will very quickly experience the difference between being present and not being present anymore.
I love the peace and harmony that I can experience from being in the present moment and quietening my mind. It’s what you practise during a meditation. But you can apply this to your life outside of your meditation by just becoming present.
Our mind takes a lot of our energy. It is constantly thinking about past events or thinking about the future. Our mind actually creates our past based on memories, things we remember. And our mind creates our future by visualizing it, planning what happens next week and by worrying if it will all be ok. But our past and our future don’t exist in our reality.
“The only time that exists in the here and now is the present moment. It is the point of pure existence, between the past and the future.”
When we step into the present moment and stop thinking about what happened yesterday and what we need to do in the next hour, we can give our body and our mind a rest. You step into the precious present moment which is the only time that truly exists. Think about it. Is it ever not now? Is it ever not the present moment?
When you think about the past, you are thinking about the past in the now. You cannot travel back in time and live again in the past. You can just remember and think about it in your mind. Because the past is gone. The past event happened in the present moment and as soon as it was over that past stopped existing and became a memory for someone or just evaporated into nothing. The past exists only in our memories, written down in journals or books, as a snapshot in pictures or videos. But the past does not truly exist.
The same applies to the future. The future only exists in our minds. We can only imagine how beautiful our holiday next month is going to be, but it has not happened yet so we cannot really truly know how it will be. We can plan to do something tonight but we cannot know for sure if that is what’s really going to happen. The present moment is now and not in the future. The future will just happen when it has become the present moment, the now.
“So to summarize: there is no past and there is no future, there is only the present moment. Do you feel already a bit lighter?”
Every time I remember that there is just the present moment and the past and the future are really just created in our mind, I feel lighter. Weight comes off of my shoulders and I can breathe easier and deeper.
If I catch myself doing one of those, I stop these thoughts by stepping into the present moment. That is where I can hit the breaks on my chatty mind, where I can focus on my breath to calm my mind and body and where I can realize what is actually true instead of what I just created in my mind.
When I step into the present moment, I remember to bring uplifting emotions into my life by creating them in my heart. I will sit at my desk, looking out of the window and realizing the present moment and that reminds me to bring up an elevated emotion like love, joy or gratitude. And then I let these feelings grow bigger and bigger so it floods my whole body and I radiate it all around me. That is something that I cannot do when I am stuck in my mind, stuck in the past or the future. That’s why the present moment is so precious to me.
The same as you are resting your mind when you are in the present moment, you are resting as well your body. All of the thinking that we are doing all day long create chemical reactions in our body through the emotions that it creates. If the thinking is predominantly positive then the emotions will be positive and that’s fine.
But our minds are generally more biased toward thinking about risks, problems, challenges and worries about the future. And these kinds of thoughts go along with chemical reactions in our body that creates stress, the pressure we are putting on ourselves. neverending worrying and emotions like anger, frustration, shame, guilt, and disappointment.
When you step out of all of that and become aware of the present moment, you stop all of this happening inside your body. Your nervous system gets a rest and can restore. It can balance itself again while in the present moment. Our body can rest when it is not flooded by the chemicals and hormones of stress.
I feel that connecting more to the present moment in meditation and during the day makes me happier and more content with what I have and I have fewer needs. When I am in the present moment, I appreciate what is around me, particularly nature and animals. I love to sit out on my balcony and just observe birds or butterflies and enjoy the sun or wind on my skin.
A few years ago I would never have been able to switch off and enjoy these things as much as I do now. Spending more time in the moment means you need less of a thrill or dopamine hit from the external world through things like shopping, gaming, and social media. You are more in the natural state of being that we are supposed to be like animals who live moment to moment.
If I convinced you by now and you want to focus more on the present moment just start small. You can set yourself reminders by writing little messages around your home and every time you see one you stop and step into the present moment for as long as you can. It’s really helpful if you link this practice with something you already do each day.
You could tell yourself that every time you brush your teeth you stay in the present moment. Every time you make yourself a cup of coffee you take a minute when it’s done and just be present.
I love to remind myself to be present when I am out on walks with my dog. I either focus on my body on how it moves or I focus on the nature around me. That always gives me a lot of energy and it’s amazing what you can see and discover when you are actually present and not busy thinking about something else.
Something you always have with you and can never forget at home is your breath. It’s a great tool to move into the present moment by focusing on our breathing. You can just observe it, you don’t have to adjust it but you can if you realize that you are breathing very flat or just in your chest. Take a deep breath into your belly and then let your breath move back into a normal rhythm and just observe it. Stay with it as long as you can – every second or minute that you spend in the present moment gives your mind and body a rest.
In the meditative state, we focus on being in the present moment and quieten the mind. I started the episode with the sentences: In the present moment, anything and everything is possible. Being in the present moment means that all possibilities are open to you.
When you spend time in the present moment either in your meditation or in your waking hours, you open yourself up to more possibilities. You are connecting to the universal energy and to the quantum field where all possibilities exist. This is gold for your manifestation practice. This is where you can create a new future for yourself, a new version of yourself.
Think about it, if you go through your day without being much present you are running on autopilot (Episode 54) and that autopilot is created based on your past experiences. By thinking the same thoughts that you had the day before and doing the same things as you did the day before, you are living your past now and by not waking up out of this state you are just going to keep going like this and your past is going to be your future.
If you want something else or something new in your life, you want to step into the present moment where you are not thinking about your past or your predictable future. Being in the present moment means you can create something new, you can reinvent yourself and step onto a new path. That’s how important the present moment is.
