I’ve come across a quick tool to make my life more joyful and I can’t wait to share it with you. If you are struggling to enjoy your life, then you want to stick around. Let me share with you how you can fall in joy with your life again.
Do you ever wonder where the joy has gone? Was there not so much more joy in our lives when we were younger? So where has it all gone? Why can’t we enjoy our lives like we did when we were children, teenagers or young adults?
And I know what kind of reasons your mind is already coming up with.
Let go of these thoughts for a moment and imagine that you can still have all of that going on in your life AND enjoy yourself again.
In this episode, I want to share with you a quick tool that I currently use to bring more joy into my life. But back to our issue at hand. Lots of people don’t enjoy their life. They might have moments of joy but not often enough to convince them that they are leading a joyful life. And this might resonate with you. Good, then you are in the right place at the right time.
If you listened to Episode 124, then you have heard me share with you the ultimate purpose of this human life that we are living. And that is to experience this life and enjoy ourselves as much as we can while doing it. See, it’s all about enjoying ourselves. So why do we then struggle to do it?
Without enough joy in our lives, we can feel lost, trapped, overwhelmed, burned out, forgotten, helpless, hopeless, and resigned to a future of what we are already experiencing today. How can we keep hustling to make a living for this life that we don’t even enjoy? Where is the point in all of this if we don’t enjoy the life we are living?
I am thankfully not anymore in this hopeless place but I remember being in it just a few years ago. So I understand what you are going through if you are currently struggling with experiencing joy in your life.
For many years I worked hard to create a great life with a career, home and family. But what does it all mean, if I can’t enjoy it? You should. That’s what was going on in my mind: Linda, you should enjoy your life more. Look at all the fortunate things that you have. You should call yourself the luckiest person alive. So why don’t you enjoy this life that you were able to create? What is wrong with you?
These are literally the thoughts that went through my mind when I was stuck in this overwhelmed, busy, stressed-out phase in my life. Thankfully it was just a phase. And that means it’s just a phase for you, too. It can all be turned around.
And if you are wondering now: Do I have to? Do I really want to learn how to enjoy my life again? That sounds like a lot of effort. The answer is No, you don’t need to change anything in your life if you don’t want to. You can stay exactly where you are and keep feeling miserable for the next decades of your life.
That might sound harsh to some of you. And that’s what I am going for. So many people complain about their lives but when they get offered the opportunity to change it, they go: Nah, that sounds like too much effort. I just stay with the devil I know.
So ask yourself the honest question: Am I ready to take the steps to bring more joy back into my life – or do I keep struggling and complaining about how unenjoyable my life is?

Fantastic! Now let’s get to the part where I share with you the tool that I recently started to use to bring even more enjoyment into my everyday life.
Instead of forcing and manipulating my environment, my outer world, to provide me with more moments of joy, I decided to find joy in the moments that are already part of my life. It was just a simple decision that I made again and again.
This tool has 2 main steps: First, you have to become aware of a moment that you could enjoy instead of not enjoying it and then make the decision to enjoy it. Let me give you a few examples.
One of the first moments I tried this out was during my meditation. Sometimes meditating every day can become a chore or a task on your to-do list, so I thought it was the perfect situation to bring more joy back into it.
So while I was meditating, I became aware that this was a moment to apply this and then I said to myself: “I decide to enjoy this now. I enjoy sitting here and meditating.” In the next second, I felt this rush of joy flowing through my body and it felt so wonderful. My mood was suddenly lifted and I was much more focused on what I was doing. It helped me to be more present in my meditation.
Another example I have is from last week when I was baking a cake. I am not the biggest fan of baking but I do like the result of having a freshly baked cake in my home instead of something that I buy at the store. So I decided to bake a carrot cake.
Usually what would happen is that I would feel mostly neutral towards the moment of preparing the cake. I would not dislike it but I would not like it either. But I might come up with some negative thoughts about the time I had to spend on doing it and all the washing up I had to do as a result of it. That would be the usual state of being I have with these kinds of everyday activities.
But then I thankfully became aware that I could apply this new tool and I decided to enjoy this moment of baking. Was I able to hold up the spirit of enjoyment throughout the whole time baking? No, of course not. I am at the beginning of practicing this so I will get better at it over time and with more moments of joy that I decide to have.
The more and more I apply this to moments in my life, the more joy I have in my life again. I suddenly have the power over the joy in my life. I don’t have to wait anymore until the next time I deem to have an enjoyable situation like breakfast with a friend, a massage or going to the cinema.
I have now found a way to increase the enjoyable moments in my life and I know that this ability, if I keep using it, will become a habit and then I will just enjoy most of my moments in my life. Exactly how I did NOT enjoy most moments in my life a few years ago. Does that make sense to you?
But my life has not completely changed. Not on the outside. What has changed is me on the inside. I changed my perspective and used awareness to make a different decision – again and again.
And you can do the same. Use awareness as many times as you can throughout your day to decide to enjoy what you are doing. If you need help with becoming aware in the first place, then create reminders for yourself.
It could be as easy as a reminder on your phone or computer. Or you could choose a particular activity to remind you to become aware of the moment and decide to enjoy it, like taking a flight of stairs or drinking a sip of water. Choose something that you do several times per day and make this your activity to become aware and enjoy yourself. With practice, you will create a new habit. The habit of enjoying your life. Isn’t that beautiful?
