This episode is going to sound like a speech of a ceremony, it’s going to be a pep talk, I am going to be your loving but challenging cheerleader. I will ask you to start becoming the version of yourself that you wish to be. And I am going to give you an important ingredient for you to do it.
Why did your colleague get the promotion and you didn’t?
Do you sometimes feel the unfairness of it and you don’t even want to see the truth why they were better suited or went a step further than you in their last project?
I have had all of these thoughts and feelings before in my career. Now I completely get how hard it is to see other people succeed in something that you want – openly or secretly.
I want to talk about one aspect of their success. One huge thing that they did differently. And it is so powerful that it can change your life for the better in all aspects and areas of your life. Once we discussed it, I ask you to think about one area in your life where you can apply this straight away. one area where you are looking to achieve something, where you have a big dream but have not taken yet the necessary step towards it. I hope I can inspire you to apply what I am going to share with you today and move closer and quicker toward your goal.
One big factor why they achieved what they wanted to achieve is because they were brave enough to turn themselves into a new version of themselves. This might sound like not a big deal but let’s have a closer look at this and you might find something that stops you from becoming a new version of yourself.
Becoming a new version of yourself means first of all to let go of who you are today, a minimum part of who you are today. And that can be scary. Just think about how we live our lives in this physical world. We create an identity by growing up and living our lives. That’s how we are someone. We have a name and we identify with this name.
Part of that name and identity is a family status like being single, married, a mother or a father, a brother, a son, a daughter or a sister. And we make these titles part of our identity. Then we probably have a job title like a business owner, accountant, assistant, teacher, CEO or stay at home mom. This title is a big part of our identity.
Then there are many more parts that we add to our identities like our nationality, our sexuality, our skin colour, our spiritual or religious beliefs and many more. Throughout our lives, we have built up a huge collection of titles and names that make up who we currently are.
And everything that we currently own, everything that we currently experience and everyone in our lives is linked to and supports our identity. Where you currently live is part of your identity. The friends you have in your life display who you are. The things you buy portray your identity to the world.
“That means we have 2 collections that build up our identity. The inner collection of names and titles we attach to ourselves and identify with – and the outer collection of possessions, status, and environment.”
Certain identity parts are easier to let go of than others. But for most of them, you need to have certain bravery to let go of your identity and take on a new identity. It is not that easy to let go of your profession and start a new one. And it is not that easy to leave your home country behind and move to the other side of the world. It is not that easy to let go of your religion and start believing in something new. These are all big changes that most people don’t attempt in their lifetime.
But then some people do it. People who tried it out once and have seen what it can do for them to let go of an identity that does not serve them anymore. And once they did it and did not die from it, they try it a second and a third time with other parts of their identity and they trust that they will be ok.
They step into the unknown and they are rewarded for it. And it gets easier and easier to let go and try out this new identity and see what happens.
It’s a skill that you can train and I want to tell you to go to the gym called life and train the heck out of it. I want you to build up the trust and the bravery to let go of the one part of your identity that does not serve you anymore and step into a new identity.
We are in this game called life to experience, evolve, to collect impressions of what life can truly be.
So what part of your identity are you secretly wishing to change but you currently don’t feel brave enough to do it?
What are you dreaming of becoming in your next life because in this life you think it’s not going to happen anymore?
Who do you look up to and wish you could do what they do all day long?
What if I tell you that life is just a game and you selected for the first few decades this figurine to play. And now you can select a different one, a different colour, a different size, a different skill set. What if I tell you that you can select whatever you want and play the next few years or decades with a new figurine and you will be happier and have lots more fun playing the game called life. All it takes is for you to say yes and take the action.
Nobody will ever save you from the life you are currently living. You are your own superhero, you are your own boss and you are the creator of your life (Episode 16). You can choose to let go of something, you can decide to change into someone else.
I have never spoken to someone who told me they regretted moving to a new country, or let go of their 20-year career and go for something that they loved doing. I never met someone who regretted letting go of a relationship that did not serve them anymore.
Each one of these people including me says: I am so glad I did it. I am so glad I was brave enough to take the risk. I am so glad I trusted that everything will be ok because it is so much better than I ever imagined.
This is what people say they decide to change their identity to someone that resonates more with them. They take the brave step to change into someone that they always dreamed of. They closed their eyes and trusted in the universe that they will be fine because their gut feeling told them to let go.
Look inside of you:
Nobody who made these steps before is going to tell you that this is easy. They will agree that it might be difficult for a while. But everyone will tell you that it is worth it and they would do it all over again. Probably even much earlier in their lives if they knew what they know now.
Everyone can do it, every single person can do it and that includes you. It is up to you to do it and bring to life what you have been dreaming of for years and years.
It’s true not just for some parts of your life and others not. No, you are the creator of everything in your life. So when are you going to start using this creator power? When are you finally ready to play your part and use this power to build the life of your dreams?
