I want to share with you a new perspective on meditation. Well, it’s obviously not new but it might be new to you. And that is the concept of mental rehearsal that you can use to change and transform into a new self or build a new life that you dream of. Stay tuned for how that actually works!
I have talked to you in previous episodes about the benefits of meditation and what role meditation plays in my life – obviously a very big one. It is part of the program I teach, I have my own meditation course that I offer and parts of my free content are guided meditations that I create for you. So all in all, meditation is hugely important to me and actually a lot of fun! Doing them and creating them.
But through my work, I meet people who either have never really tried meditation or just dabbled in it. I hear them talk about how they don’t have anything against meditation but have not really found the benefits of regular meditation. And additionally, they struggle to know how to use meditation, and for what purpose. For most of them, and that was the case for me a few years ago, meditation is being used to relax from everyday stress. And yes, that is how you can use meditation but wow, that is just the tip of the iceberg. A very small tip.
That’s what I want to tackle in this week’s episode. I want to give you a really good purpose and reason to meditate. And funnily this way of using meditation is being used in so many other areas of our society. It’s just called something else. And that is Mental Rehearsal.
Mental rehearsal means you are practising a task or performance mentally instead of the actual practice. You imagine the practice in your mind, in your inner world, instead of practising it with your body in the outer world. And there are so many areas where this is already being used.
The biggest area is professional sports. Athletes are mentally rehearsing all the time. They are actually being trained to do that as part of their regular preparation for games, competitions or performances. A runner mentally rehearses getting off to a good start. A basketball player practises scoring under a lot of pressure. Dancers will actually go through the choreography in their head to make sure that they truly embody it and not forget any steps.
Mental rehearsal prepares our mind for action. And if athletes use this technique to get a gold medal or win the biggest competition in their lives, why should we not use it in other areas of our lives? So I invite you to use mental rehearsal to build the life of your dreams. I invite you to mentally rehearse who you do want to be, and how you want your life to look like.
So in that sense, you use mental rehearsal in your meditation. Instead of just relaxing you actually start manifesting during your time in meditation. The best way is to find guided meditations that help you to get off to a good start. One of my meditations actually does exactly that.
Now, I want to talk to you about a couple of really important ingredients to add to this mental rehearsal for it to work in the best way. The first one is emotions. Quite often we use affirmations or visualizations to manifest and change something but that is only one part of effective mental rehearsal. This is just for the mind.
What is missing in that practice are the feelings that go along with the image you are dreaming about. And the emotion or feeling is then the part of the mental rehearsal that is for the body. So thoughts, beliefs, affirmations, and images are for the mind and feelings, and emotions are for the body.
When you are picturing your future or who you want to be, you need to feel it, too. It’s not enough to just imagine it, you need to train your body to feel like that future person. Let’s say you want to become a popular inspirational speaker on the big stages of the world. You will picture yourself on the stage with people applauding you. You will imagine your name on advertisement boards for conferences and events.
So how do you feel when you are on that stage? What kind of emotions comes up when you see people jumping out of their seats when you walk on that stage? How do you feel when you see your face and name on a big-screen advertisement? That is what is missing for a lot of people when they visualize or practice affirmations. They don’t work very well or at all if you don’t combine them with an elevated emotion.
Let’s say you tell yourself 100 times per day that you are wealthy and abundant. But if your body is not feeling wealthy and abundant but rather feels in lack and scared then all the affirming in your mind is not going to work. The emotions of your future are the most powerful energy you can create in your mental rehearsal and meditation.
Let’s get to the second important point why manifesting a new life might not work. And that is becoming familiar with your current self, the one you want to leave behind. It’s your starting point and the more you know your current thoughts, beliefs, behaviours, and habits, the better you can change them to the new self with new thoughts, beliefs and habits. So let me share with you why it is so important to be familiar with your current self even if that is the one you want to change.
Mental rehearsing in your meditation who you want to be is really powerful as you get your mind and body already programmed for the new self. But then you want to start being the new self with your eyes open.
And that’s when it’s important to truly know yourself. You can catch yourself when you have a thought or a belief that is standing in the way of your new self. And when you realize you just had this thought again, then you can change it at that moment. And that’s a win.
And changing into a new self is made up of thousands of little wins throughout your every day. that’s when you actually begin to be the future self and live the future life that you desire.
Most of the time we are standing in our own way when we want to change. So get to know yourself better so you recognize when you are blocking your way to the life that you desire.
I teach this technique to my students in the ENERGY ACADEMY. And I love to hear their success stories when they start their daily practice for who they want to be. First in their meditations and then with their eyes open.
