Today we are going to look at a step that you might be missing if your life has not changed to what you practice during your meditation. All of your efforts in your meditations might actually be hindered by something you are missing to bring your dreams to life. This is going to be sooooo good. You don’t want to miss this. Let’s begin!
Meditation is a practice. It’s a practice for so many things. For example, you can meditate to get better at something, to change something or to feel differently. Meditation has truly allowed me to change myself and my life for the better.
But what I hear time and time again or observe in people who meditate regularly is that they are frustrated and disappointed with their results. Either they don’t see the changes yet, or the changes they see are not enough. And there can be many reasons for that.
But I want to talk to you about one particular reason today. That is the one missing step which is to apply what you practice during your meditation into your life. To practice with your eyes open in the game of life.
Lots of people meditate every single day and sometimes even for several hours. But one thing they don’t do is to practice it with their eyes open. And that is one of the biggest reasons why they don’t live the life they wish to live.
Something I learned from Dr Joe Dispenza is that you can meditate each day for an hour on being the new self, but if you then spend the rest of your waking hours as the old self, how is the change supposed to happen quickly?
You are awake for 16 hours per day and you meditate on your new self and your new life for 1 hour. And the other 15 hours you spend as the person who is pushing, controlling, competing, fighting, forcing, wishing, hoping, predicting, or whatever you think will get you to the new self faster.
The one thing that is missing is being the person you want to become. Being the person that you want to become now, in your waking hours with your eyes open. And for that to happen, you bring the visualisation, the imagination and frequency of your future self into your life in the here and now.
Let me share with you a few examples of what I mean by practising with your eyes open and applying what you meditate on in your life.
Let’s say you practice meditation to live a calmer and more balanced life. So you have one or more meditations to help you balance your nervous system. Different tools can be used to do that during a meditation like breathing consciously, lowering your brain waves or to practice letting go of what unbalances your nervous system. And tons of meditations can help you practice this.
But what you don’t want to do is only practice the self-regulation of your nervous system during the meditation. You want to self-regulate your nervous system in the other hours while you are awake. What you practised during your meditation wants to be applied in life with your eyes open.
I, for example, use the lowering of my brain waves when I want to fall asleep. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I immediately apply this tool to lower my brain waves and put myself back to sleep. And over 95% of the time it works like a charm.
Another example is when I am stressed or really busy, I actively become aware and calm myself down by breathing consciously. That way I move my nervous system back into balance and know I will be able to better deal with the current situation than when I am stuck in the fight-or-flight nervous system.
What does all the practising during your meditation do for you if you don’t start to apply it to your life and make it second nature? 1 hour of a 16-hour day is only 6%. Who do you think gets the upper hand: the new self that you give 6% of your energy and time or the old self that gets 94%?
Let’s have a look at another example. Let’s say you want to change something and live a new life. We can use burnout for this example. Your current self or old self is overworked, overwhelmed and burned out. And you meditate each day on your new self being energized, satisfied and content with the flow of life.
You have gotten really good at visualizing the new self in your daily meditation but you are wondering why hardly anything has changed in your everyday life. You are asking yourself when you are finally going to be this energized and satisfied person who is living an easy life.
Well, you have forgotten the step to bring the new self that you practice being in your meditation into your life. You have to be the new self now even if your circumstances and your environment haven’t changed yet.
You cannot just practice being calm and energized in your meditation and then react with stress and overwhelm in the other hours of your day. That’s not how you are going to change.
Each day you want to be the new self for more hours in your day than the old self. And yes, this can start with just a few minutes with your eyes open. But if you don’t start applying your practice to your life, you will never create enough momentum for your body and mind to truly embody the new you and let go once and for all of the old self.
My third example is about creating a certain feeling in your life. And my favourite example for this topic is abundance. Lots of people want to create more abundance and use meditation to change their lives to experience more abundance.
There are lots of meditations that help you to visualize, manifest and attract abundance into your life. I use these kinds of meditation to create more of certain emotions in my life like freedom, peace or gratitude.
And they are very powerful helping you to create the feelings and emotions during the meditation. But what about your feelings and emotions when you step out of the meditation and into your life? How do you feel for the rest of the day?
I have observed many times that people assume that meditation is the only thing they can do to change their reality. But it’s not. It’s a powerful tool and yes, it’s going to change your reality – but only to a certain degree if you keep self-sabotaging your efforts by staying the old personality in your waking hours.
If you practice feeling abundant and living an abundant life in your meditation but then for the rest of your day you focus on the lack of abundance in your life, you’re going to have a hard time changing your reality. It’s going to take longer or never will get to the level that you imagine during your meditation.
Yes, the universe is co-creating with you and helping you to align your reality to what you practice during your meditation. But at the same time, it’s aligning your reality as well as the person you are outside of your meditation.
If you are 10 hours per day a person that experiences the lack of abundance through your thoughts, feelings and senses, then the universe is aligning and providing you more lack of abundance. Because that is what you are sending out to the universe.
You want to take the step and be an abundant person with your eyes open. How does an abundant person think? How does an abundant person feel? And imagine, how does an abundant person walk? How does an abundant person work? All of this is what you practice in your meditation but what you are missing is practicing it with your eyes open.
Now that I have given you enough examples to help you understand what I mean, I want to share with you my main tool with which you can be the person now in your waking hours. And that tool is awareness.
Becoming aware again and again during your day. Make yourself stop and reflect on how you were just thinking, feeling and behaving. Was it based on your old self or your new self? And if it was from your old self, then decide new and chose consciously a new thought, a new feeling and a new behaviour.
This is all you have to do. Become aware again and again and observe yourself. Change your thoughts to reflect the new you when you catch yourself having a limiting thought. Change your emotion to feel like the new you when you realize that you were feeling an old low-vibrating emotion. And change your actions so you behave like the new you when you catch yourself in an old habituated behaviour.
Every single time you do this throughout your day counts. Every time you align yourself to the new you will add up until you hit the tipping point where your body and mind will finally let go of the old personality and decide to be fully the new personality. The one that you desired to become during your meditation.
I actually have one more tip that I learned a few months ago and am still practising to apply to my life that really helps with being the new me. But I will share that with you in the next episode.
